MERRELL BARRACKS

MERRELL BARRACKS NÜRNBERG GERMANY

These barracks (German: kaserne) was built for the SS Signal School and a SS Signal Reserve Unit. Soldiers from the kaserne were used to support the Nürnberg Nazi rallies. The post was captured by American soldiers in April 1945 and renamed Merrell Barracks after Private Joseph F. Merrell. It was HQ for 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

  1. Sgt. Berns, was in the 182nd Maint. MOS 45G. Our shop was at the entrance to the bowling alley on the right. Was there from 10/81 to 9/83. Was part of the big drug bust that had to march to the 2nd ACR HQ and hear a speech from the Col. I was NOT implicated.

I do want to ask a question, Did anyone use Trichloroethylene, also called TCE and slang Trike? If so in what capacity, degreaser, electronic cleaner, etc.

    THX!

  2. I was there at 614th Maintenance Company from around April 1979 to February 1981 (about a year and a half). Came from William O Darby in Furth where I lasted about a year (MP Battalion- man what a relief it was leaving that place). As for Merrell had a blast! Remember great rock concerts, German beer, going to the October Beer Fest in Munich, beer festivals at Nuremberg & others in surrounding areas, traveling all over Europe at incredibly low prices. The bus tours were give aways, youth Eurorails passes. Incredible memories!

  3. I was stationed here from Jan 1976 to Sept 1978 in the 3/17 field artillery, headquarters company. If someone from that same time frame happens on here, please message me. I would enjoy reminiscing.

  4. I was stationed at Merrell Barracks from January 1971 through May 1972 – 569th PSC – SP5. See page 4 – Harold D. Reaves for some photos of my fellow Company members. We met our obligation to our country and had a bit of fun on the side… Harold – Thanks for posting all the photos!

  7. Hi, I was PFC Dennis Williams. I was stationed at Merrell Barracks from 1979 to 1981 with the 87th Maintenance Co. Most of my friends belonged to the 2nd ACR and I well remember the 3-17 FA. I remember the drugs and alcohol being a major problem, especially while I was there.

Being stationed here had good benefits though, city transportation was easy to use and very accessible. You could visit the Zoo, Zeppelin Field, the castle, Furth, and other barracks without much trouble. Access to the main north-south train line was always a plus. Speaking of Zeppelin Field, little did I know that it was designed to be a replica of the “Seat of Satan” found in Revelations.
